Ways to help with Hurricane Harvey relief - Natural hairstyle for mens and womens

I can't stop thinking about the people in Texas, I haven't been able to for days. People are suffering so much, and there's no way to know when that will change. When I first heard the news of the flooding in Houston I thought it was just that: some flooding. I also heard that though it was originally supposed to be a hurricane, that it had been downgraded because the storm wasn't severe enough. Then Richard showed me a photo of the water levels reaching a traffic light at an intersection, and I was shocked to think about all of the incredible devastation that must be going on there. I started looking up articles about Houston and the gulf coast and different ways that our family could help, and just felt sick with heartache for all those affected.

We've seen the destruction from hurricanes before and we know that water damage takes years to recover from (if your home or business etc recover at all), but we can help! After seeing several friends asking online about ways they could contribute, I decided to share as many different ideas for helping as I could find. Because though it'll never feel like enough, even a small donation of funds or food or service, etc, can go a really long way towards supporting and sustaining all of those impacted by Hurricane Harvey.

TO HELP WITH FUNDS

Global Giving has set up a relief fund that currently has over $650,000 in donations with a goal to reach 2 million. They provide food, clean water, gasoline, formula and diapers, hygiene products, and short-term shelter. They also have easy buttons on that page for sharing the fund to your facebook or twitter account.

- Direct Relief USA is accepting financial contributions to aid in offering prescription drugs and various other medical supplies to those in need. They work with clinics and primary care doctors

The American Red Cross has set up a very quick and simple donation page with all donations being tax deductible.

- Catholic Charities USA is sending donated funds to support recovery efforts including direct assistance, rebuilding, and health care services.

- The LDS Church is sending truckloads of bottled water, food, hygiene and cleanup kits, tools, and many other supplies. Anyone wishing to provide support in their efforts is encouraged to donate to their church humanitarian fund.

- Southern Baptist Disaster Relief Fund has teams on site to offer help, and they are always accepting funds to help in their efforts.

- Portlight provides relief specifically for people with disabilities, who require medical equipment and assistive technology have what they need as they evacuate. They accept donations via Paypal.

- Save the Children is accepting donations towards their efforts. They've already sent emergency responders to assist anyone in need.

The Salvation Army is accepting funds online, or you can call 1-800-SAL-ARMY.

- Samaritan's Purse has sent disaster relief units towards the effected areas and are accepting financial donations towards their efforts.

TO HELP WITH CHILDREN

- The Texas Diaper Bank in San Antonio has been putting relief kits together for families with tiny little ones who need clean diapers. Since Diapers take up so much space in delivery trucks, most other organizations are choosing to deliver food over diapers, so the diaper bank is helping with that need.

The Driscoll Children's Hospital in Corpus Christi withstood the storm quite well and is accepting donations now for a large portion of the affected areas. They're also gladly accepting donations of blood for anyone who lives in the area.

TO HELP WITH FOOD:

from The Houston Press: "If you want to give food, these food banks encourage you to consider staples: Pop-top (canned) meat and fish, powdered milk, cereal, canned fruit, fruit cups, peanut butter and jelly. Cleaning supplies such as bleach and paper towels will also be accepted. In addition to donating at food bank facilities, local grocers may provide collection points for donations."

TO HELP WITH SHELTER

- Trusted World in Dallas is operating three different shelters for people that have been evacuated and displaced. They are needing donations of funds, supplies of all kinds, and volunteers to help sort out the items that are being donated.

- Many people who live close but have not been affected by Harvey are listing their homes on Airbnb for free for evacuees. Most of the available listings currently are in Austin, Dallas, and San Antonio, but if you live in another part of the state that has not experienced any flooding you might consider joining in this charitable effort.

TO HELP THE HOMELESS

- The Houston Coalition for the Homeless is accepting financial donations to help facilitate shelter for homeless people in the area.

TO HELP ANIMALS

- The SPCA of Texas is taking in hundreds of animals that have been uprooted by the storm and separated from their owners. Many of them are also coming from shelters along the coast that aren't safe where they are now. They're accepting donations to help with the costs, or you could open your home and foster a displaced animal until it can be reunited with it's owner.

This is by no means a complete list of ways to help, but I think it's a pretty good start:) Make sure that no matter which organization or site you donate to that you check before you donate to make sure you know where your money is going. The Center for International Disaster Information recommends using sites such as Give Well, Charity Navigator, Charity Watch, or the Better Business Bureau to double check.

In addition, I keep seeing stores like Apple and Amazon etc advertising as giving large portions or 100% of their sales to help fund relief organizations, and many grocery stores such as Whole Foods and Walmart have pledged to match cash donations up to $1 million in total to the Red Cross for Hurrican Harvey Relief. So, if you're shopping around this week think about supporting businesses that are putting the victims first at this time. Also, I would love for you to link any shops or businesses below in the comments that you've noticed are doing that!

Thank you so much for visiting today and for all the charitable efforts already going towards providing assistance in every way.

Texas, we love you, we pray for you, and we stand by you.

5 curl defining products which actually work - Natural hairstyle for mens and womens

I'm constantly asked "What hair products do you use?" and any curly will know that finding the 'perfect' products takes a lot of trial and error. Achieving defined curls in particular was something I used to struggle with. My hair is fluffy and bushy without product (which I've come to love) but I like to have options and in the past year I've tried so many gels, creams and mousses in the pursuit of defined curls which don't work well for my hair at all that I thought I'd share what does.

All have pros and cons but these are the products which always deliver for my hair which is mostly closest to 3c in texture (see this naturally curly chart). How I prep and care for my hair for definition is key and I've detailed my full process in this post but the most essential part is having clean, wet hair first. I've found that gel-based stylers and creams are most effective for me and I don't tend to use any of these products together as I've found they work enough on their own to provide the kind of hold I'm looking for. The definition from each product usually lasts for a couple of days before it wears off and I can usually get away with spritzing my hair with a light moisturiser or water to revive the product between washes.

The Gels
Of all the products here this is the product I currently rely on the As I Am Curling Jelly Coil and Curl (£10/227g) most. It was originally gifted to me by the brand last year and I've been buying it on and off since as it's not always easy to get hold of. It's a gel-like liquid texture containing Aloe Vera, Beetroot extract and Vitamin E. You don't need a lot of it for definition as the hair can look a little crispy if you use too much and hair needs to be well moisturised before with a leave-in but my curls always look beautifully defined with this. I just rake in small amounts in sections and let air dry.

I also love the Design Essentials Coconut & Monoi Curl Defining Gelée (£9.50/340g)* which contains Aloe Vera, Sunflower Oil, Marshmallow Root and Coconut Oil. It's much thicker than the As I Am Curling Jelly but I can go heavier on application with this without the hair looking coated in product and the hold is very natural-looking. I've found the Design Essentials Gelée works best with other Design Essentials products (posted here) as I've found it can go a bit flaky or leave a residue when I've used it with some of the other moisturisers and leave-ins I have - a good way of testing out whether products will work together in your hair is to rub a little of each of them together in your palms before applying.

One of my other favourite gel-like products is the Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curling Gel Soufflé (£10.99/326ml). It's the easiest products for me to get hold of as it's available from Superdrug or Boots, tends to be on special offer a lot and the product lasts me a long time too. You only really need a small amount for hold as too much can also make the hair sticky. Like the other products it contains Aloe Vera (I'm starting to sense a pattern) and I'm convinced it's the Agave Nectar inside (a humectant which provides hold) which makes this product so good at giving my hair definition without drying it out.

The Creams
I love to use creams as I've found they provide a more hydrating, natural hold than gels in general. The two products I use most are the Aveda be curly curl enhancer (£21.50/200ml)* and the Bb Curl Style Defining Creme (£24/250ml). The Aveda curl enhancer contains Aloe Vera and Marshmallow Root like the Design Essentials Gelée but the texture is quite runny - it feels and looks like a light conditioner. The Bb Curl Creme is much thicker and needs to be smoothed and worked into my low porosity hair for definition and it contains Babassu Seed Oil, Brazil Nut Seed Oil and Beeswax. Both also contain 'cones' which can build up on the hair if overused and not shampooed out thoroughly so I tend to apply small amounts of either of these products on wet hair after conditioning. Neither of these are as purse-friendly as the gels so I don't use these as often. I rarely use these with a leave-in conditioner (as it's not needed) so these are products I like to travel with as it means I don't need to take as much with me.

"Three flowers in a vase" hairstyle - Natural hairstyle for mens and womens

Hi everyone,

I hope you are having a wonderful day.  This morning I attempted to copy a technique I saw on a YouTube video, but my version turned out quite different from the original.  I ended up with what I like to call "3 flowers in a vase."  Can you see them?

To make this look, I sectioned off the top poofy section, then I sectioned the rest of my hair into three parts, one in the center with a section on either side behind my ears.  I put the center section into a low ponytail.  Then I French braided the loose hair on one side with half of the hair from my ponytail, like you would do in a circle French braid.  I pulled the ends of these two "circle" braids up through the "top" of my "vase, and turned them into three flowers.  The instructions sound quite confusing, but I think you can see from the pictures what I am trying so badly to explain.

Thank you for visiting my blog!  I'm getting close to 1 Million page views, thanks to all my friends like you around the world who click on my blog and take time to look at the different braids and hairstyles I share here.  I hope to see you again soon <3

Shiny and Simple French braid updo - Natural hairstyle for mens and womens

Hi friends,

This morning my hair was still rather wet from when I washed it late last night, but I put it up into a French braid style that combines a poofy front section, two French braids, and a low braided bun.  Whenever I braid my hair while it is still damp, the braids look smooth and fresh all day long, which is so nice.

I'm so thankful to everyone for the overwhelming positive response to the different articles that have come out the last few days about my hair.  How amazing to be able to share my hair story with the world, and hopefully encourage others to grab that jar of peanut butter and grow hair that is healthy from the inside out :-)  Be sure to check out my updated hair care routine and favorite products' post when you get time.  As always, thank you for visiting my blog, and I wish you a lovely start to the brand-new week.

The total solar eclipse of 2017 - Natural hairstyle for mens and womens

photos from March of this year by Xan Craven of Xan's Eye Photography || IG: @xanseye

It was over a month ago when Richard said some old friends from growing up had invited our family to come join a little 'eclipse' party they were throwing. They live in Rexburg, Idaho which was right in the full totality zone, so even though I was a bit apprehensive about the kids missing a school day, everyone was excited enough about it that I figured it couldn't hurt. It did seem like a pretty good opportunity, but I'd just become so tired of traveling away from home, and I was pretty sure that it wouldn't live up to all the crazy hype that had been going on. What I didn't realize was what a truly incredible once-in-a-lifetime opportunity it would turn out to be.

We made the drive last weekend as a family, and spent a couple relaxing and fun-filled days with those sweet friends with the kids playing in their big back yard and swimming in the sunshine. They also watched several movies on the projector screen all piled in a big heap, and we made s'mores every day. There were long talks for the adults late into the night with pot pie and laundry folding, and when the morning of the big eclipse came we all made little preparations outside as the kids played and the park next door filled up with people to watch.

The ladies used paper plates to help the special glasses have better coverage for all the little ones and tied elastic between the straps so they'd stay on well, and we all sat outside eating brownies and melon and talking as the changes started happening around us.

The first thing was obviously seeing a little crescent shape cut out of the sun as the moon started to move across it, and we all looked up with our glasses now and then with interest as the coverage grew. The next thing was seeing the light around us noticeably dimming quite a bit. I was surprised to start to feel chilled as the temperature dropped, and I went inside to gather up a couple jackets and blankets for the children and myself. When I came out again there was only a sliver of the sun showing, and it was about as dark as dusk outside.

I made sure all the children had their glasses still firmly in place before looking up with my own pair, and as the excited noise from the crowd next-door grew we all watched in utter amazement as the last of the sun disappeared behind the moon. We all took off our glasses as the bright glimmering ring and corona appeared behind the new moon and I was totally blown away. I had seen many pictures and even video clips of total solar eclipses before, but this was unlike anything I had been expecting. None of those captures did justice to what I was seeing, and I couldn't help but exclaim out loud in amazement at how incredible and beautiful it was. The cheers that erupted from the crowd next door and of my friends and family filled my ears and only helped to add to the emotions welling up in my chest that I can't quite describe. It was as if time was paused, and the earth faded away for a moment, and I felt so individually lucky for myself and my little family to be able to witness such a celestial event. I felt such a connection to the skies and to heaven, and an assurance that each one of us is unique and beautiful in our own way, that we're worthy of love, and that we matter so so much. My heart felt so large, and tears stung my eyes a bit as I experienced overwhelming love for this world and for my beautifully broken life.

I hope that I can remember those feelings more. I want to be better at recognizing the constant reminders of the good things in my life and the love that I do have, and not let the pain of the past blind me so often. I strive to remember how much of a difference we all make just by being ourselves and trying our best, instead of letting self-doubt take over and beat me down. It's amazing the things that go through my mind about myself that I would never let me children think about themselves for a second. But in that moment of complete totality, with that perfect diamond ring of light shinning down at us in the near darkness, I held Richard's and Lydia's hands and I wanted to strive more towards acceptance of who I am now, and who I can be moving forward. To be the kind of mother, giver, wife, friend, maker, doer, and believer that I've always seen as out of my reach, but at that moment seemed more like a goal that we all can reach.

I could see the eclipse as being extremely anticlimactic for anyone outside of the totality zone and especially for many others who couldn't or didn't care to catch it at all, but for my family and our sweet friends it was an awesome and fun experience, and for some of us it was even a pretty life-changing one. I'm so grateful we were there to see it.

So, did you manage to catch the eclipse? haha
          Take care friends,

My updated hair care routine and favorite products - Natural hairstyle for mens and womens

Hi friends,

Wow, what a week!  An editor from the UK's Press Association discovered my blog and contacted me to ask for an interview.  Within days people around the world were reading about my hair in online magazines and newspapers like the Daily Mail, Women's Health, Allure and Good Housekeeping, to name a few.  How exciting to be able to share my hair story with so many new friends and readers.

The recurring theme in all the articles has been my #1 hair secret~ peanut butter!  Some readers are confused at first, thinking that I rub peanut butter into my long hair.  So I wanted to clarify my hair care routine and share some of my favorite products.  If you have any questions, just pop them in a comment below and I will respond.  Thank you, and have a beautiful day <3

Washing my hair:

Shampoo and Conditioner:
I wash my hair twice a week, and my fringe I wash each morning.  I love to use Herbal Essences shampoo, especially Moroccan My Shine and Long Term Relationship.

I love the matching conditioners to my favorite Herbal Essences shampoos, and I also have an absolute favorite brand of conditioner called PURA D'OR that is made from all-natural organic ingredients.  This conditioner makes my hair super soft and shiny, and so easy to comb out.  The shampoo is great, but because it is all-natural it doesn't create the suds that I prefer.  This hair product line is known to be anti-hairloss which is another plus.

Oils and Masks:
Before I wash my hair, I take it down from my hairstyle or braid and massage coconut oil into the length of my hair.  I never put any oils on my scalp, only on the length of my hair.  I concentrate mostly on the sides of my hair and the ends.  I use organic, cold-pressed unrefined extra-virgin coconut oil, found in the grocery or food section.

Sometimes I switch it up and use monoi oil from Tahiti.  I love the regular monoi oil, and also the monoi oil with ylang-ylang or vanilla.  Monoi oil is basically coconut oil that is infused with Tahitian gardenia flowers.  The scent and feel of it is amazing, my hair loves it and so do I.

I like to use hair masks on my hair that I can mix up myself using products in my kitchen.  I generally use a hair mask once every few weeks.  Here are two of my favorite hair masks:

Coconut Oil, Olive Oil, and Egg Hair Mask
For my ankle-length hair, I mix together 2 tablespoons coconut oil, 2 tablespoons olive oil, and two large eggs.  I whisk these ingredients together in a mixing bowl, then carefully apply the mixture to the length of my hair.  I try not to apply the mask too thickly on the bottom of my hair, because the eggs have a tendency to make my ends dry.  When I've finished applying the hair mask, I pile my hair up into a bun and cover my hair with a plastic grocery bag.  I let this sit for about an hour, then I wash my hair, being careful to first rinse out my hair thoroughly in cool water.
Mayonnaise, Honey, and Milk Hair Mask
For my length, I mix together 1/2 cup of mayonnaise, 1 1/2 tablespoons honey and 1 1/2 tablespoons milk.  I stir the mixture together till it looks like a smooth salad dressing or conditioner.  Then I apply this hair mask to my hair, concentrating mostly on the length but especially the sides and ends.  I pile my hair into a bun, and let it sit for about 30 minutes.  Then I wash my hair, being careful to thoroughly rinse my hair first in cool water, get get the mayo mixture completely out of my hair.

Condition-Wash-Condition:
Now for my washing routine!   I wash my hair twice a week, usually on Wednesday night and Saturday night.  First I rinse out the oil or hair mask using cool water.  Then I generously condition the length of my hair.  I never put condition close to my roots or on my scalp, because this makes my hair fall out when I comb it.  After I condition the length, I shampoo the top of my head.  I never put shampoo on the length of my hair, because this dries it out.  The conditioner helps protect the length of my hair while I shampoo the top.

After shampooing the top of my head, I rinse everything out in cool water.  Then I condition the length of my hair a second time, and when I'm finished in the shower I rinse my hair once again in cool water.  I always try to keep the water as close to cold as possible, because hot water damages my hair.  I use a fistful of conditioner each time, and just a small amount of shampoo.  With shampoo, a little goes a long way.  With conditioner, a little extra never hurts :-)

Combing and drying my wet hair:

After I wash my hair I gently twist the length to wring most of the water out.  Then I wrap my hair in a towel and leave it for 15 minutes or so.  This lets any remaining conditioner soak in and makes my hair easier to comb out.  I use a wide-tooth comb on my hair and start to comb from the ends of my hair and slowly work my way up to the top of my head.  I never use a brush on my hair, but I do use a round brush on my bangs.  I have a rat-tail comb that I use to make parts when I'm fixing my hair.

While I'm combing out my wet hair, if the ends feel at all dry or stiff I rub in a little rose oil or jojoba-argan oil.  During the week if my hair feels a bit dry, I rub some rose oil or jojoba-argan oil into the ends and comb it through the rest of my hair.

I like to wash my hair in the evening so it can air-dry all night long.  I drape it across the pillow and over the side of the bed so the air can reach it as I sleep.  Usually by morning, my hair is dry.  If I ever wash my hair in the morning, it will still be a bit damp when I put it up in a bun or braid, and usually it never dries completely no matter how many days pass.

Heat, and curling my wet hair:

I use a hair-blow dryer on my bangs each morning.  I have a flat-iron hair straightener that I use to straighten my length before length pictures, but I only use it a couple of times a year.  If my length pictures feature braid waves, I don't use it at all.  (On a side note, I have never dyed my hair.  My strawberry-blonde hair color is completely natural.  I also don't use highlights, even natural ones.  I notice if I'm out in the sun a lot, that my hair does turn a bit more blonde especially around my face.  My eyebrows and eyelashes are naturally blonde.)

Generally I don't usually have a problem with tangles.  But if I ever do have a tangle that I am having trouble combing out, I have a bottle of Johnson's No More Tears Detangling Spray that I use.  It works great and does the job properly.

To curl my hair, I wash it in the afternoon then roll it up in socks while it is still wet, like I explain in this post.  By the next morning, my curls are dry and ready to show the world.  In the island humidity my curls don't last long, but they are beautiful and fun and I love them.

Trimming my hair:

I think that long hair looks longer, thicker, and healthier when the ends are even.  Fairy-tale ends can be gorgeous, but personally I prefer long hair to have an even, straight hemline.  I trim my bangs when they begin to hide my eyebrows, about every 3 or 4 weeks.  My length gets trimmed when it starts to wrap around the comb as I'm combing it out, which means I've hit floor-length.  Or I get it trimmed if the ends begin to look uneven or a bit scraggly.  My mom is my trusted designated hair-trimmer.  I stand in a kitchen chair, and she gently and evenly trims the bottom to make my ends even once again.  The most I've ever had taken off at one time was about 4 or 5 inches.  I was a teenager at the time and had been over-parting my hair which made my hair develop a "V" shape in the middle.  My mom cut off the ends of the "V" to make my ends even, which is why she had to take off a few inches.  Normally she takes off anywhere from 1/4 inch to 1 inch or hair at a time.

My hair reached knee-length when I was a teenager, and later in my early twenties it began to reach ankle-length.  I prefer ankle-length, and keep my hair trimmed here.  My goal is to have hair that is thick and even all the way to the ends, with very little taper.  Regular trims and coconut oil work wonders on keeping my hair thick and healthy all the way to the ends.

Fixing my hair:

Most of my blog is dedicated to the many ways that I fix my hair, but I will just add that I do use hairspray on my bangs and on my finished braids and hairstyles.  I use a little bit of hair gel on my signature side bang.

When I style my hair, I prefer to use a variety of small clips rather than lots of bobby pins or a single large clip, as I feel the small clips hold my hair in place better and carry the weight evenly without tugging and giving me a headache.  I try to avoid tight ponytails, and love to use the large soft hair ties that I got from Claire's in Japan to make loose low ponytails that I can easily turn into a bun.

My #1 hair care secret: Peanut Butter!

As you probably already know, my favorite secret to healthy long hair that grows fast is...peanut butter!  I eat a spoonful or two of peanut butter every day, usually mixed into my Slim-Fast milkshake that I have for breakfast and again in a second Slim-Fast shake at nighttime.  The chocolate shake combined with a spoonful of peanut butter is a delicious combination, like a Reese's Pieces peanut butter cup but in a glass.  The protein in the peanut butter helps my hair stay healthy from the inside out, and also helps my hair grow faster and thicker.

Thank you for reading about my hair care routine and favorite products!  I'm so excited to share hair tips and pictures with my friends around the world.

Haartraum's "Braid-in-Braid" Hairstyle - Natural hairstyle for mens and womens

Hello friends,

A few days ago I tried out this lovely hairstyle idea from my long-hair friend in Germany.  In my version, I combined a Dutch braid on one side of my head with a four-strand braid that took up the length of my hair.  I folded my braid up and clipped the end in place with my favorite tiny hair clips.  I love how this braid turned out, and will definitely try it again <3

Thanks so much for visiting my blog!  Have a lovely day.
