Review | Illamasqua Makeup - Natural hairstyle for mens and womens

Last month Look Fantastic officially launched stocking British beauty brand Illamasqua on their website. Illamasqua is one of those brands I've wanted to try after so many recommendations but I wasn't entirely sure where to start with so many products being suggested to me. At the launch I received (left to right above) the Hydra Veil (£32), the Masquara in Raven Midnight Black (£18), the Lipstick in Box (£19.50) and the Gel Sculpt (£22)*.

Of the products here, the lipstick is my absolute favourite (but you all know by now that lip products are always my weakness). The shade Box is a beautiful matte scarlet red and I've been reserving it mostly for night's out. The pigmentation is stunning and the colour lasts fairly well, even when eating and drinking! The Gel Sculpt has been a much needed addition to my makeup collection too. All my makeup culling at the beginning of the year left my contouring and highlighting game very weak. Until recently contouring was not something I did on a daily basis (or ever at all really) but the Gel Sculpt makes it so easy to add that dimension back to my face after applying foundation. It looks dark in the packaging but the formula is quite sheer and buildable. Applying is easy and blends so effortlessly - there's no muddy-looking finish so it's great for anyone who isn't used to contouring often. I definitely prefer this type of product to the contouring powders I've used in the past.

The Hydra Veil combines a moisturiser with a primer and has a strange jelly-like texture. You can scoop out a little with the tiny spoon provided and when you apply it melts onto the skin and feels really refreshing. It leaves the skin with a good base to apply makeup on leaving a natural finish. Recently how I prep my skin before makeup has become just as important as applying my makeup. Having tried a lot of different primers this year the Hydra Veil is definitely my favourite. The only thing I'm not crazy about is the packaging as I generally prefer to use something with a pump or in squeezy tube. The Masquara defines the lashes well and has a great formula but I tend to go for products with a comb-like wand. I have small eyes and I'm always massively clumsy with mascara so if the brush is too big it tends to go around, rather than on, my lashes! I found with this is I often would apply a little and then take a clean brow wand to distribute the product to prevent me smudging it everywhere. The shape of the wand alone is a reason I wouldn't buy this product, but if you have bigger eyes or wear falsies this may be more ideal for you!

Rosette Updo - Natural hairstyle for mens and womens

Hi everyone,

Today I used small rosettes as accents in my hair, to match the roses on my shirt.  My braided updo is actually three blossom Dutch braids, with a side bun.  I'm thankful to say I took all the spin-pin rosettes out of my hair with hardly any trouble at all :-)

Hi friends,

Today I fixed my hair in a very easy hairstyle, with three English braids and a low bun.  It might have taken me 5 minutes to fix my hair in this style~ very nice when you are in a hurry like I was at the time!

Daddy's Special Day - Natural hairstyle for mens and womens

It was a week ago today. Two days after Father's day, nearly a week after he'd passed. A week that was full of meeting with the funeral director, choosing flowers, ordering a casket, endless phone calls, picking out music, typing up the program, sorting through thousands and thousands of photos that told the story of our love and life together. My sweetheart. So much heartache, so many mixed emotions. It still doesn't feel real.
------------------------------------
Much love to my dear friends Tracy Layne and Justin Hackworth for taking beautiful photos on the day, that my children and I will keep close to our hearts forever. I'm sharing a few from Tracy today to honor the anniversary, to help me accept a bit more, and to encourage you to hold onto your loved ones a bit tighter.
If you're not in the mood for a heavy picture story, or if you feel uncomfortable viewing and reading more details of my husband's funeral, feel free to click away, but please come back later. ♡

Thank heaven for me sweet children. Just as they have kept me smiling every day through the hardest months of my life, trying to put our situation into words that they can understand has helped me understand it more myself.

Trying to explain to my little 6-year-old Ellie that everyone we loved was going to get together for a special day for daddy, that there was going to be lots of hugs and tears because we all missed him so much, helped me prepare for it myself.
Telling my innocent 5-year-old Sophie that we were going to be seeing daddy's body for the last time, that it was okay to be sad for ourselves but that we should be happy for daddy, helped me to acknowledge those things as well.
Finding the words for John, my 4-year-old, that daddy's body was in that beautiful box, that it would keep his body safe in the ground, and that he wasn't sick or hurting anymore, helped me to accept those things a bit more too.
And telling my sweet 2-year-old Lydia, to say "goodbye daddy, see you soon." while we laid our hands on Martin's casket, solidified in my mind a beautiful picture of our family all together again one day, and I could close my eyes and almost feel his warmth and hear their sweet giggles.

It doesn't matter what you believe in, but at the end of all things life is so precious, people are important, and what matters the most is love. Telling my sweet children that I know, that the love they have for their dad, and the incredible love that he has for them is strong enough to keep them connected forever and ever, and that they'll see him again one day... That's the only thing that can make them smile again, and give them hope to keep going.

And telling them that every day helps me to hope too, and to smile, and to keep going.

I miss you so much, Martin.

The Workshop: The Wig Witch X Simply Gorgeous Salon - Natural hairstyle for mens and womens

This Summer I'm partnering with family owned afro hair salon SIMPLYGorgeous to offer an exclusive series of workshops  as part of my new venture, The Wig Witch.

The workshops, created by two black owned businesses aim to change the narrative and experience of afro hair by  connecting like minded women, with the opportunity to learn a new skill and heighten the discourse on afro hair and beauty.

Taking the conversation offline, these intimate  workshops are centered on education and passing on knowledge of an integral tool to the afro hair community – protective styling.

The sessions  will provide each guest with the skills on how to create their own custom made wig, tips on hair care  and much more.

Sessions will be held at 10am, 1.30pm, and 5.30pm. Please get in touch specifying which time you'd like you'd like when booking your ticket.

To make the most of the workshop we ask participants to bring their own hair. Our friends at Pretty Kinks  have kindly offered a 15% discount to attendees who'd like to purchase hair for the sessions and can be used up to one month after. Details on redeeming discount code provided with ticket.
Those unable to bring their own hair are still encouraged to attend and observe the workshop.
In addition to learning a skill we've also linked with a selection of the UK’s top independent beauty brands, created by women of colour for women of colour to offer you a take home bag of quality products worth over £20.

We hope you can join us!

Topsy-Turvy Updo - Natural hairstyle for mens and womens

Hi everyone,

I saw a hairstyle on someone in a crowd, and liked it so much I decided to try it out myself.  I made small ponytails, one at a time, then turned them inside-out with the topsy-turvy ponytail technique.  For my bun, I folded my hair up loosely and clipped it in place randomly with small hair clips.  I love the curly look this hairstyle has!

Hi everybody,

Thank you for all the views, comments, likes and birthday wishes <3  I had a wonderful week celebrating my birthday in Japan, and am so happy to have a place like my blog and Facebook where I can share pictures and experiences with my friends around the world.
Today I fixed my hair in a high bun that swirled up to look not unlike a strawberry-blonde Swiss roll.  Oooh, that reminds me of the wonderful birthday cake I had!  I certainly could go for another piece :-D
